Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed concern over Rohit Sharma’s inconsistent performances in Test cricket, stating that he expected more from a player of his caliber.
Speaking to RevSportz, Ganguly admitted that Rohit’s red-ball form over the past four to five years has been underwhelming.
“What has surprised me is his form in Test cricket. A player of his stature and ability can do much better than what he has shown. He needs to reflect on this because India has five tough Tests against England coming up,” Ganguly said.
India has played 10 Tests in the last five months against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, winning only three. Rohit’s performances have been inconsistent, and Ganguly believes he must step up, especially with challenging conditions ahead.
“Just like in Australia, the ball will seam and swing in England. India needs him to deliver in red-ball cricket. In white-ball formats, he is one of the greatest ever,” Ganguly added.
Leadership Uncertainty for England Tour
Despite leading India to a Champions Trophy victory, Rohit’s position as the Test captain for the England tour remains uncertain. While he is a strong candidate, the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has yet to make a final decision.
Reports suggest that no clear consensus has been reached regarding Rohit’s automatic selection as captain. Additionally, Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness remains a concern, and India lacks a standout young leader ready to take over.
Rohit was under pressure to perform after India’s 1-3 Test series loss to Australia, but his success in the Champions Trophy has provided some relief. However, whether his ODI achievements will influence the decision for the more demanding Test format remains to be seen.
In England, Rohit has scored 524 runs in seven Tests at an average of 40.3, with just one century to his name—figures that highlight the challenge ahead for both him and Team India.
